Golf in the Middle of the Gulf: How Offshore Crews Are Hitting ZERO® Biodegradable Golf Balls from a Floating Oil Platform

Life aboard a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel is anything but typical. Positioned 250 miles south of New Orleans in the Gulf of America, this offshore facility is home to a crew of 90 and surrounded by nearly 10,000 feet of water. To keep spirits high and routines fresh, the crew regularly organizes creative events.

This past May, we shipped a large quantity of ZERO® Biodegradable Golf Balls to the crew, and their use case is one of our favorites yet.

Turning the Helideck into a Golf Course

On special occasions like the Fourth of July or Christmas, the crew transforms their helideck into a tee box. Using a floating life ring secured by rope about 150 yards out, they host a “Closest to the Pin” competition.

With 15 to 20 crew members taking part, the game becomes a spirited contest complete with prizes and bragging rights. Hitting golf balls from a platform in the middle of the ocean isn’t just fun—it’s unforgettable.

Golfers in the Making

More than just a fun break from the day-to-day, the experience has sparked something more. A few crew members have become golf enthusiasts after trying it offshore, turning a lighthearted event into a lasting hobby.

As one crew member told us:

“This inventive activity showcases the crew’s imagination and resourcefulness to create unforgettable moments that could not be possible without your biodegradable golf balls.”

We’re proud to support these kinds of moments—especially when they take place 250 miles from the nearest golf course.
